Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) & Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are frequently the step down from inpatient services. Both are outpatient services, but PHP is more intensive that IOP. A PHP typically runs 5 days per week with sessions each day lasting from 4 to 8 hours each day. An IOP is for people who work or go to school and need more than just weekly therapy. An IOP includes individual and group therapy sessions throughout the week. These programs typically run 3 days per week with sessions each day last 2 or 3 hours.

UPMC Child and Adolescent Acute Partial Hospitalization Program (CAAPHP)

The Child and Adolescent Acute Partial Hospitalization Program (CAAPHP) provides an intensity of treatment similar to that available on an inpatient unit, in a less restrictive, community-based setting. This short-term, intensive level of care allows adolescents to benefit from consistent, structured treatment while maintaining their usual living arrangements with their families in their communities. Acute partial hospitalization programs can provide a “step down” level of treatment for adolescents discharged from inpatient programs, or a “step up” level when outpatient treatment is not effectively meeting a child and adolescent’s needs.
